A few years ago , when I got my first set of Apple AirPods , I liked the idea of coming up with a routine with them that was impromptu , that I could do at the coffee shop or wherever . That ’ s the first two phases of this trick , but I always felt it needed more . Then I was at a NW Ring of Fire magic club meeting and someone won the raffle and their prize was the trick Self Vanishing Headphones that was put out by Ellusionist . That prop was the missing ingredient for the last two phases of the trick ! Unfortunately , the full routine is no longer impromptu , but I can still do the first two phases anytime I have my AirPods on me !

Effect : You take your AirPods out of their case and set them on the table . You pick up one in each hand and one disappears and reappears in the other hand ! This is repeated a second time with one reappearing in the other hand . Now you take both AirPods and make them disappear and they reappear inside of their case ! For the final phase you hold the case with AirPods in it in one hand and the AirPods reappear in the other hand and the case is shown empty !

Needed : You will need a set Apple AirPods ( 1 st generation ) and the Self Vanishing Headphones ( SVH ) that Ellusionist put out . See notes at the end if you don ’ t have or don ’ t want to buy or use the SVH .

Set Up : You ’ ll need to alter the gimmicked case for the SVH . When you get it you can ’ t put AirPods into it . Carefully drill holes where the stem of the AirPods would go so that you can put them into the gimmicked case .

Put the AirPods in the SVH case . The lid won ’ t close all the way and put this into your pocket .

Working : Take out the AirPod case and open it . Remove the AirPods , set them on the table , then casually show the case empty , close it and set the case on the table to your left .

Arrange the AirPods so that one to your right and the other is also to the right about 12 inches in front of the first one . Your right hand reaches forward and covers the one furthest from you and your left hand covers the one closest to you . Both hands will move at the same time , your left hand moves to the left miming sliding the AirPod to the left , but really leaving it in place as you right hand moves backwards taking its AirPod with it stopping when it ’ s covered the one left behind by the left hand . Now your hands make fists and as your right hand makes its fist , it grabs the AirPod left behind by the left hand .

Open your hands to reveal the right hand now has both AirPods and your left hand is empty !

For the second phase you will set both AirPods in a row , in front of you with one on the left and one on the right , so they are about 12 inches apart . You will now do Martin Gardner ’ s Ten Count which has a motion attached to each number to make the AirPods go from one hand to the other .

1 : Cover the AirPod on the right with your palm down right hand . 2 : Cover the AirPod on the left with your palm down left hand . 3 : Turn your right hand palm up above its AirPod . 4 : Turn your left hand palm up above its AirPod . 5 : Your right hand picks up its AirPod . 6 : Your right hand pretends to put its AirPod into the left hand . 7 : The left hand closes , turns fist down and moves to the left about 6-8 inches . This happens immediately after the count of six . 8 : The right hand picks up the AirPod that was under the left hand adds it to the palmed one and closes into a fist . 9 : Open the left hand to show its empty 10 : Open the right hand to show it has both AirPods

For the third phase , pick up the two AirPods with your right hand and pretend to put them into your left hand , but keep them palmed in your right hand . Your left hand goes above the SVH case and opens to show the hand empty . Your left hand grabs the SVH case and the thumb holds back the gimmick . Keeping the palmed AirPods hidden in your right fist , you will extend index finger to open the lid of the case to show the AirPods have reappeared in the case .
