The reasons for the high suicide rate are complex . The remote and isolated nature of many northern communities can create feelings of loneliness and despair . The extreme weather conditions , with long , dark winters , only serve to exacerbate these challenges . Limited access to healthcare services and mental health resources compounds the issue . Poverty and food scarcity are other factors . Bullying often festers in this environment , sometimes leading victims to suicidal thoughts and attempts .
Armed with knowledge and determination , Brian embarked on a 16-year odyssey , journeying from coast to coast to coast in ultra remote Arctic communities . He took center stage , not with his usual magic shows , but with a unique blend of anti-bullying and suicide awareness magic presentations . His determination even led him to Grise Fiord , the world ’ s closest community to the North Pole , inhabited by a mere 84 residents .
Arriving in these remote communities , Brian is often greeted at airports that are sometimes nothing more than thin strips of ice . Snowmobiles , dog sleds and 4-wheel ATVs have become his conventional modes of transportation . He has even taken the reins of dogsleds . His adventurous spirit truly shines as he shares local delicacies like muqtuk ( whale blubber ), raw air-dried salmon , seal , caribou , arctic char , moose , and herbal teas crafted from lichen and medicinal plants . Brian believes that to truly understand and connect with a community ; you must fully immerse yourself in it .
Ten years ago , fate brought Brian into the orbit of Dave DeVos , the founder of “ Influencers Motivating Influencers ” and “ Motiv8 Canada Council .” DeVos and his organization were on a mission to educate people about mental health and deliver positive wellness messages , workshops and activities to the remote northern communities . Together , they formed a formidable duo impacting lives while forging a deep and lasting friendship .
Brian doesn ’ t merely talk about bullying ; he uses the art of magic to illustrate the problem and its potential solutions . No mere assembly program , his multi-day presentations , though centered on grave topics , are designed to be fun and empowering . Bullying , he emphasizes , isn ’ t limited to name-calling ; it can escalate into insidious cyberbullying and physical violence which is not bullying but a crime !
The scourge of bullying doesn ’ t discriminate ; it can afflict people of all ages , from young children to teenagers , women , men and even elders . Sometimes , the weight of this torment pushes victims to the brink of suicide .
