W
here on earth did the time go? I'm sure I say this every year but
it seems as though … last week … I was putting together the
January 2017 edition. Making the decision to go monthly proved
the right thing to do, although it's more work for me the readership has
increased and VANISH is now firmly established as THE magic magazine
magicians want to get their news and stories from. I'd like to take this
opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to the magazine over
the past year, and especially those who help me with editing and are there
when I simply need to talk.
One of the reasons for the success of VANISH is that our focus is not always
on artists regularly seen on television or known/famous within the magic
community. We like to give unheard of/up coming magicians around the
globe the chance to shine in our pages, and there were many shining stars
in 2017. I feel it is a fitting way to finish out the year with our cover story …
Erica Vanlee. Erica is an incredibly talented and versatile artist and it's an
honor to have her grace our December issue and share her story. I predict
we will hear many wonderful things about her in the near future - and
please remember you read about her here in VANISH … first. I'd also like to
thank all those folks who worked so diligently on Ericas' feature story.
In this edition I pay tribute to my mentor and closest friend Wayne Rogers.
Wayne appeared on the cover of the March Edition 2017 and his story
was featured within its pages. Sadly Wayne passed away in November and
it’s left a huge hole in the many lives he touched. His performances will
continue to be enjoyed thanks to YouTube and his original creations sold
throughout his career, such as the appearing ladder and shovel, are still
used by many entertainers and enjoyed by audiences the world over.
Nick Lewin has written an excellent article on Chuck Jones, who celebrates
60 years in magic. Chuck is known to have influenced magicians about as
much as other TV magic stars such as Mark Wilson and Paul Daniels. Chuck
continues to tour throughout New Zealand and I was fortunate enough
to be on many tours during my early 20s. I believe Chuck now holds the
record for the longest touring show in the world - 25 years is certainly a
long time.
Finally, I hope you are all having a very busy Christmas. I've had a wonderful
run of corporate work and about to go on tour with the incredible Murray
Hatfield and Teresa. They are the ultimate professional team and my
favorite illusion act.
When this tour ends I am truly looking forward to some much needed time
off, relaxing with my family over Christmas.
