V9K1E6 CANADA COPYRIGHT HAPPY ANNIVESRAY Our cover story, this edition, has been in the works for over four years. Trying to pin down and talk to John Taylor proved difficult simply because of his hectic cruise schedule. Had I printed everything John shared with Vanish, concerning cruising and performing over that time period, the magazine would be twice the size. He has a wealth of information and advice for those who want to break into the cruise industry … … and because I’d spent over 15 plus years cruising we sure had a lot of terrific war stories. In fact, some of you may recall, I had so many cruise tales I ended up writing two books on the subject, The Real Deal and The Complete Guide to Cruise Ship Work. I would like to congratulate Murphys Magic Supplies on their 20th Anniversary … bravo! From very humble beginnings they have become the worlds largest suppliers of wholesale magic. It is not an easy business for anybody to be in, however, they’ve risen to the top because of the leadership and hard work of every person in the company. The majority of my work on a computer is done at 6am in the morning, if I need something from Murphy’s or have a question I know can phone and I’ll find somebody there. And as I’ve found out on more than one occasion, even after hours, once most of the folks have gone home, chances are there is still somebody there I can reach. This team of dedicated and loyal people really show what a tight family unit Mark Murphy has created. Many of them have become very close friends and we often discuss life outside of magic … such as our families (I know right … there is a world away from magic). Here’s to another 20 years and beyond … It’s a great pleasure to have Jeff Christensen join the VANISH writing staff. Jeff is not only a wonderful performer he’s also a tremendous teacher having worked as an educator in schools over the last twenty years. His new series is going to focus on education and magic, a topic very close to my own heart having been a high school teacher myself in the mid 90’s. Finally, I would like to start a discussion and hear your views on magic clubs, good or bad. The concept is not to degrade clubs in any way but to try and find solutions/thoughts/ideas to attract the next generation of magical enthusiasts. Over the past year I’ve visited many magic groups around the world and it’s apparent to me it’s becoming an epidemic … people would rather stay at home and watch lecturers on their computers while chatting with friends via Social Media then attend meetings. We are now at crossroads and if nothing is done then organizations/assemblies/ clubs will fade away and become a place for retired magicians. Paul Romhany All rights reserved.
