I chatted briefly with Shin on the day of the finals to wish him luck - my gut feeling told me he was in for a life-changing moment, and indeed he was. Shin’s final performance was absolutely mind blowing and again … he raised the bar for magic. I have no idea what another magician will do to follow him. It will certainly take a lot of creativity. I truly look forward to seeing where Shin will be in another year. Charles Bach and Chip Romero put together a fantastic article on Doug Henning. One of my bucket list items is to see Chip’s collection of Doug’s illusions. As a kid growing up in New Zealand it was a big event to sit down and watch a Doug Henning special. Doug really was the driving force behind moving magic forward. Chip has done the magic world a huge favor by preserving the history of Doug Henning. Magic seems to be in-demand again, having a tremendous resurgence. Doug made it popular, Copperfield took it to another level and now Shin Lim is elevating the art. With all the magicians appearing on television these days kids seem to be getting back into it. As a professional magician I’ve noticed an increase in my work simply because of others success. We should celebrate the accomplishments of other magicians because it has an impact on our work, whether we realize it or not. October is a milestone in my life as I turn 50 - it’s also a time for reflection. What an amazing life I’ve had thanks to magic. It has taken me around the world many times, allowed me to live the life I want. I never take this for granted, it’s been hard work, however, the one thing I do know, is that if you have a dream you owe it to yourself to follow it. Until next edition have a great month.
