At a corporate event as MC with other Kiwi magicians
married , Guy found himself being asked to do family shows . One day his wife Robyn put together a hobo clown-like costume for him , and after his first show she said she ’ d never seen him so happy performing . Out of that came his character Happy the Hobo . He quickly found he was in demand , and ended up being the busiest kids ’ performer in the country . He continued performed as Happy the Hobo until Robyn ’ s passing twenty years later .
I asked Guy why his character was so successful , and he said , “ because I truly enjoyed doing it . The one thing that I did at the end of every Happy the Hobo show was to shine a little light and say , ‘ If you see anybody
12 JUNE | 2023 without a smile , give them yours .’ And I get the kids to do that . Then I ' d stretch my arms out and say , ‘ who wants a hug ?’ And the kids would come running up . But sadly , today , as much as I ' d love to hug kids , you can ' t do that .”

Guy grew up with hypnotism books around the house , and eagerly studied them . When he returned to New Zealand , he got one of the few jobs he ever had working as a production manager at a pickled onion factory .
