Sometimes I find a prop and have no idea what I ’ ll do with it , but still want to use it somehow . Last October I came across a giant metal nut and wanted to produce it . I remember all the old pictures of Don Alan with one . I needed to come up with a simple routine that I could do standing and use any table . The most logical way for me to produce it was from under my hat . Here ’ s a simple routine that I came up with to produce the nut and much to my surprise it works really well !

Effect : You have a bolt and a nut and both are covered with your hat . You reach under the hat and remove the nut and put it in your pocket . When you lift the hat the bolt and nut are still there . This is repeated a second time with the same results . The third time you take the bolt and put it away and when you lift the hat there ’ s a giant nut under it !
 Needed : A Bolt with two nuts that will fit onto it . You will also need a large nut , as big as you can fit in your back pocket and easily remove . Finally , you ’ ll need a hat , in theory any hat could be used , however I do it with a hat that has a brim all the way around it , not a baseball hat .

Set Up : The bolt with the nut threaded on it , is on the table , one nut is finger palmed in your right hand and the hat is on your head or if borrowed , it will be on someone else ’ s head .

Working : Display the bolt with the nut threaded on it with your left hand , then your right index fingers spins the nut to remove them from the bolt and set everything on the table in front of you . 
 Cover up the bolt and nut with your hat . Reach under the that with your right hand and bring out the palmed nut and show it to the audience . False transfer it to your left hand and pretend to put it into your pocket . 
 Lift the hat with your left hand to show that the nut is back under the hat !
 Recover the bolt and nut with the hat .

Reach under the hat and bring out the palmed nut and show it to the audience . Put the nut into your left hand and this time actually put it into your left pocket . Two things are going to happen at the same time . You will lift the hat with your right hand to show the nut is back under the hat ! At the same time your left hand grabs the giant nut from your back pocket . Next your right hand will move backward towards your left hip and your left hand ( holding the giant nut ) will stick the giant nut into the hat . You will then move both hands forward , keeping the giant nut concealed under the hat and cover up the nut and bolt that are on the table . Set them so that the giant nut is to the left of the bolt and normal sized nut . Your right hand will now reach under the hat and palms the nut and grabs the bolt at the finger tips . Bring your right hand out , show the bolt and put that into your right pants pocket , leaving everything in your pocket .

Lift the hat to show the giant nut !

Notes : To lengthen the routine , you could do almost any “ two in the hand , one in the pocket ” type sequence with this , simply substituting the hat for your hand . If that ’ s something that interests you , look into Doc Eason ’ s All Screwed Up routine .
