Prediction is opened to reveal the performer knew which word from thousands would be selected ahead of time . Ring is then placed back upon his finger .
ITEMS NEEDED TO PERFORM EFFECT :
• Performer needs two rings . ( Not necessary to perform effect but works better with two ).
• Performer needs a book .
• A pair of scissors .
• Rubber cement .
• Three spectators .
PREPARATION :
One ring goes on your finger ( or not if you only use one ring ) Other ring is prepared as follows :
Remove one page from the book , cut out a circle slightly larger than the ring . See Figure 1 .
This center of this circle is important . The best way to do this is to place the ring upon the page and move it around until you find a section in the center of the ring that has one whole large word and all other complete are short ones . Make sure you have one or two partial large words around the edges but not a complete part of a compound word , for instance , chologist would do but ville of summerville would not be good as it is a full word by itself . These words will help later with some verbal misdirection . In the above example you can see part of the word impossible which when we are done will read ossible and you can see part of the word Periodicals .
Place rubber cement on edge of the ring . Place ring on the section you selected making sure that the only large word is the one you are going to predict . Best if this word is in the center . Figure 2 .
Once this has dried use your scissors to cut around the excess paper on the outside of the ring .
This ring goes into your pocket . The ungimmicked ring goes on to your finger . The book goes on your table or your pocket . If you have a duplicate book that has no page torn out , use it , but if not use the same book as no one will ever notice .
HOW IT WORKS :
The print on the ring will match up to the print in the book . The ring will act as a “ freely ” isolated area from which a selection is made in the book . The reflection of the metal of the ring helps to hide the fact that the print does not continue on the outside of the ring . All looks copasetic visually . Figure 3 .
PERFORMANCE :
Just prior to your performing this effect , slip the non-gimmicked ring off our finger . No one will notice the ring missing . If anyone did notice the ring they would have noticed it at the beginning of your show when you came out .
Or , you can hand out your book and while it is being examined and while a spectator places the prediction in their pocket you can then secretly remove the ring from your finger and dump it . Get the book back and have the spectator on stage stand to your right and open it to any page . As the spectator is opening the book and pointing at one of the two pages , get the gimmicked ring into your right hand ( if right handed that is .) The moment the spectator tells you which page he / she wants to you use , you then reach over to your left hand , point your ring finger in and act as if your are removing the ring from your finger with your right hand as you say , “ we will need a ring .” ( A slight , don ’ t overdo it , struggle to remove the ring is not a bad thing here , again , do not over do it .)
Immediately place your ring on the book page so the extra piece of paper is flat against the book . Spectator should not be able to see if the text does not match up as your right hand will be hiding the ring from their view . Move the ring to the top left side of the page and at the same time line up the text in the ring to match the same orientation as the text on the page of the book . Now boldly move your right hand away and step back as you address the spectator on stage to help you select two more spectators in the audience . Have these two people stand . ( Keep in mind that the spectator on stage has no idea what is about to happen and hence has no reason to notice what words are in the ring . They do not know what you are going to do yet with your ring and if the text orientation matches up , nothing is amiss .)
