Touring vs . Residency
Hollie ' s career has spanned both touring internationally and holding a residency in the Las Vegas show Late Night Magic . Touring allows for grander productions with larger budgets , but it comes with the challenges of constant travel and lack of personal time . In contrast , a residency offers stability and the opportunity to refine acts consistently . " With a residency , you still have a separate life . You get to sleep in your own bed , cook in your own kitchen , spend quality time with your friends ," she notes . Performing in smaller Vegas shows has allowed Hollie to experiment and grow as a performer .
When asked what she misses most about touring , Hollie nervously admits , " the money !" She further elaborates , " But really the scale , freedom and creativity that a touring production budget gets you and the ' theater-type ' size of audiences . On tour , we do have more pyro than a KISS concert !"
" I ' ve toured most of my adult life and so the novelty of one-nighters on tour buses has definitely worn off but if we get to perform in one place for a few days at least , I do love exploring the vegan food , galleries , markets and interesting bars in other cities ."
Diving deeper into the comparison between touring and starring in a residency show , Hollie shares how the more intimate shows in Vegas have given her a space to grow creatively .
" I am eternally grateful for the opportunities I ' ve had to perform all over the world and realize that I am supremely lucky . Performing in smaller shows in Vegas has helped me grow exponentially as a performer . From altering and tweaking material for an adult-only , small venue , late night , ' Vegas ' ( sometimes very drunk ) audience to getting to play with crowd work ( and sometimes control ), interacting differently with the rest of the cast onstage in my routines and theirs in terms of finding characters plus just being able to perform so consistently in the same venue and develop new routines - being able to try new things out in front of a real audience ." Hollie revealed that she only lives five minutes from the residency venue in Vegas , giving her the freedom to come and go like a true Vegas-veteran .
Being based in Vegas has allowed Hollie the opportunity to perform in other shows in Sin City . She ' s been hired as a ' featured act ' in various venues , allowing her to see how different audiences react differently .
" I can adapt my acts without a video camera feed . I ' ve been able to create my own 20 minute set and then 30 minute set , which I ' d never had to do before as my acts were always broken up throughout the ensemble magic shows ."
" Getting to perform on huge stages in theaters and arenas all over the world is an amazing feeling and one that I ' m very aware not every performer gets to experience . I ' m pretty much the luckiest person in the world . Some people in the audience have never seen any kind of live show , let alone a magic show and it is so rewarding to give them that kind of experience and also inspire young people to learn magic . I just got a message from a magician friend in Nashville who is doing a girl ' s 6th birthday party tomorrow . She came to
