JULY | 2025 PAUL ROMHANY A COUPLE OF JOKERS

First shown to me by my mentor Wayne Rogers.

This is a favorite of mine, based on a Karl Fulves “Sandwhich Card Trick” from one of his series of Self-working Card Trick books. It is a very powerful and commercial piece of magic. I use it all the time.

Comment that you will not find the card yourself. “I have a couple of Jokers to do the job for me.” Spread the deck to reveal the two face up Jokers in the centre of the face down deck. Photo 2.

EFFECT A card is selected and returned to the deck. Deck is spread to reveal two face up Jokers. The Jokers are positioned top and bottom of the deck, each slightly out-jogged. Deck is tossed to the other hand leaving a card trapped between the Jokers. It is the chosen card.

SET UP The pair of jokers is set face up on top of the face down deck, with one face down card on top. Photo 1. Square the deck to hide the Jokers.

Split the deck above the Jokers, Photo 3 and cut the upper half of the deck to the bottom. Square up.

Remove the Jokers and place aside momentarily. At this point the selected card (Ace of Spades) is second to bottom in the face down deck.

ROUTINE Cut off the top half of the deck and hold as you spread the lower half to have a card freely selected. There is no force. The selection (we’ll use the Ace Of Spades) is then returned to the top of the half deck you are holding (the half with the face up Jokers) and the balance of the cards placed on top.

To prepare for the climax of the trick, the selection must be transfered to the bottom of the deck. You achieve this while appearing to simply show that the selected card is not on the top or bottom.

You now have to show the Jokers. If you were to spread the cards straight away, the selection (Ace) would be two cards above the two face up Jokers.

Delay this reveal with a couple of cuts so there is less chance for the audience to associate the position of the Jokers with the chosen card . Cut off one third of the deck and complete the cut. Cut off two thirds of the deck and complete the cut.

Turn the deck face up and say “Before we go any further, I just want to check that your card is not on the bottom, it’s not the . . . ? “ (Name bottom card)

This casual cutting of the deck retains the face up Jokers in the centre of the deck with a face down card on top of them, and the selection on top of that card, followed by the rest of the deck.

As you speak turn the deck face down again and perform the Glide. Photo 4. ie you secretly slide back the bottom card and pull out the

second from bottom card (the selection) and place it back on the bottom.

Close the three card fan and turn the cards over. Ask the spectator to name their card. Fan the cards again to reveal the chosen card face up between the two face down Jokers. I

To the spectators all you have done is shown the bottom card, pulled it off the bottom of the deck in a casual gesture, and replaced it. In reality the selected card (Ace) has been moved to the bottom ready to be revealed. The timing of turning the deck face up, and turning it down again as you execute the Glide, is critical. Continue . . .

“And it’s not the top card?” Show the top card f you do not have two Jokers use two of the Aces.

Call them your “Ace Detectives”. They ’ll do the same job!

When working commercially, the two Jokers can be labeled with your client’s logo, the name of a store, restaurant etc. It is even possible to use two of your business cards provided they are the same size as the deck.

and replace it. “But it’s in here . . . (spread the deck) . . . . somewhere.”

Square the deck. The selected card is now on the bottom. It is ready to be “sandwiched” between the two Jokers.

Place one Joker under the face down deck. Joker is out-jogged by half its width. Place the second Joker on top in a similar out-jogged position. Photo 5 & 6

The position of the fingers under the deck are very important. Your fingers must make contact with both the selected card and the joker. On top, the thumb is touching the second Joker.

With a quick sideways motion, toss the deck and catch it in the other hand. The two face up

Jokers will remain in the hand with the face down selection trapped between them. Photo 7.

JULY | 2025 LOUIE FOXX THE WEATHER TRICK

VIDEO WALK THROUGHS for Louie's Magic can be watched on Vanish Magazine Bonus section of his blog at: www.MagicShow.tips and use the password: vanmag

I have a joint issue in one of my fingers and I realized that it gets sore when it’s raining. That made me realize I have an “old man” super power, I can predict the weather. Of course I had to turn that into a premise for a magic trick. Here’s what I came up with.

Effect: You show a stack of cards with weather icons on them (pictures of weather, like clouds, sun, etc). Someone names a city in another state/country, and you write down a prediction on another card. The person then uses their phone to determine the weather in that city and matches the weather icon to the weather in that city. You turn over your prediction and it’s correct!

Method: For this trick I used jumbo cards, but I can’t see a reason why normal poker sized cards wouldn’t work.

You need a marker, 1 blank face blue backed card, 7 double blank cards and one red/blue double backed card. One side of each double backed cards you will draw a picture of a type of weather. The weather types are: Sunny, cloudy, partially sunny/cloudy, rain, snow, fog, and lightning. One the other side of the card write the name of the type of weather. On the blank faced card draw a cloud with meatballs coming out of it. This card will allow you to show the backs of the stack, but it’s a weather type that no city will have. While you will probably never have to show the face of this card, if you do, it’s a gag card with a play on the title of the book and movie “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”.

could dry out the marker, however since I use the marker for other things in my show, I just mime writing. Set the card face down on the table with the red side up.

Working: Hold the stack of weather icon cards face up in your right hand, with the fingers gripping the narrow right end. The left hand takes the top card. Once the card is in the left hand the right hand turns over to flash the back as you say what weather type it is, then turn the right hand’s card face towards the audience. Repeat this a few times by pulling the next card onto the card(s) in the left hand and flashing the back of the packet in the right hand. Finally put the left hand’s cards onto the cards in the right hand and set the packet on to the table.

Ask the audience to use their phone to see what the weather is in the city they named. Once they ’ve found the weather have them say it out loud to the audience.

Pick up the stack of weather icon cards and go through them to find the card that best matches the weather in their names city. Remove that card and set the stack aside.

Set Up: Arrange the cards from the top of the face down pile: Clouds with meatballs card, then all the weather icon cards, with the weather icons face down (printed words face up). The red/blue double backed card is on the table red side up along with the pen.

Ask the audience to name any city in another state/country.

Next grab the red/blue double backed card and add it to the selected weather icon card. Hold them vertically in front of you with your thumb on the side towards the audience. You want the red back on the audience’s side and the weather icon behind it.

Pick up the red/blue double backed card with the red side towards the audience. Pretend to write something on it with the marker. You

You will now do the “two card monte move”. As you turn your hand over to show the other side of the cards, your right thumb slides the cards it’s touching so that the two cards switch position. As soon as your hand has turned over, the left hand holds the double backed card with the blue side towards the audience and the right hand raises its card to about your eye level to display the handwritten weather matches the selected weather icon.

Notes : This is similar to a Paul Curry trick (I think) with a deck of cards where you write the name of a card on the back of a joker.

When you ask them to name a city, do not ask them to name any city in the world. It’s important that the city is far away. I quickly learned that many people will name a nearby city that would have the exact same weather as where you currently are. Obviously, that makes the prediction part that’s about the happen have very little impact.

I’ve made a tutorial video of this trick, to watch it simply visit my magic blog at www. magicshow.tips and click on the “vanish magazine bonus” category. The password is: vanmag
